In this complete guide to wool - the most popular yarn around - passionate wool expert Clara Parkes translates the vast world of sheep and their wool into the language and context of knitting. What is wool? Clara starts with the fundamentals: what wool is made of, how it gets off the sheep, and how it is transformed from a jumbled mass of dirty fluff into a gorgeous yarn that so tempts us at our local yarn stores.Who makes it? Parkes conducts an inspiring tour of sheep breeds from around the world - introducing us to the animals who give us their wool - and explains how to best knit with yarns made from their fibers.Which yarn do I use? If only there were a way to read a skein to know how it would behave and what it wanted to become. Now there is! Parkes demystifies the generic (non-breed-specific) wool yarn you'll find at your local yarn shop, showing you how to best determine what every yarn longs to be.What do I knit? Parkes went to some of the most creative and inquisitive design minds of the kniting world to provide more than 20 patterns that highlight the qualities of specific types of wool. The Knitter's Book of Wool teaches you everything you need to know about wool - and its journey from pasture to pullover. The next time you pick up a skein, you won't have to wonder what to create with it. You'll just know.

*Note that because there are not any graphics to show how to form any knit stitches – only pattern graphics in black and white, this book would not be for beginners. This book is written for knitters at least at Medium/ Medium-High to Advanced levels because knitters would already be familiar with the stitches to be able to make these patterns (Chapter 5). However, Chapters 1-4 are appropriate reading materials for knitters of all levels.**The Abbreviations and Techniques sections at the end of the book do not contain any stitch graphics to demonstrate how to knit any stitches. Beginning-level students would need this.Clara Parkes’ “The Knitter’s Book of Wool: The Ultimate Guide to Understanding, Using, and Loving This Most Fabulous Fiber” is a mouthful of a title! This 2009 hard-copy book with a dust jacket has 207 pages, almost all of which have color photos or black and white graphs. The Knitter’s Book is published by Potter Crafts.***In short, “The Knitter’s Book of Wool” chronicles the journey of wool, starting with the sheep; the possible addition of other fibers to the wool to temper and change the characteristics of it; and finally, yarn is created to then be wound into a skein or cake of yarn on a winder (but the book doesn’t discuss yarn winding). This book has 2 pre-Chapter sections: ‘Preface’ and ‘Introduction’.The 5 Chapters follow these 2 sections: Chapter 1. ‘What Is Wool?’; Chapter 2. ‘From Pasture to Pullover’; Chapter 3. ‘Meet the Breeds’; Chapter 4. ‘Plays Well with Others’; and Chapter 5. ‘Patterns’.Note that Chapter 5. ‘Patterns’ begins with page 89 and finishes on page 187, almost 100 pages (or a little less than ½ of the book), which is a substantial amount of the bookThe last post-Chapter section is ‘Resources’ and it has 11 subsections:1. ‘Washing Wool’2. ‘Keeping Moths at Bay’3. ‘Resource List’4. ‘Processors’5. ‘Recommended Reading’ (****No recommended basic [and higher level] knitting stitch books were listed.)6. ‘Abbreviations and Techniques’ (This was already discussed in **, above.)7. ‘About the Designs’8. ‘Author Acknowledgements’9. ‘Glossary’10. ‘CYCA Standard Yarn Weight System’ (This would greatly lend itself to Machine Knitting yarn weights and thickness, but there is no mention of anything other than HK.)11. ‘Index’Going back to Chapter 1, some of the sub-sections listed are: a. ‘Anatomy of a fiber’ b. ‘The softness Myth’, and c. ‘Creating with Crimp’. Buy the book to see all of the subsections of this and other Chapters as well as that of all of the sub-sub-sections in the entire book. This is a good book to have in any knitter’s library, but it is aimed at higher-level knitters (not beginners), doesn’t mention MK yarn weights (some readers machine knit and want to create their own yarns), or mention yarn winding into skeins or cakes.*****The Pattern section takes up about ½ of the book, so this book is a good buy. Be sure to run an internet search, though, to locate an ‘Errata’ sheet (which is common for books with printed patterns). Print it out and place it in the book for when a pattern will be selected and used to make an item.
